That’s right party people, I’m preparing to have my mind blown. On Wednesday, hubby and I are going to see Wicked! Woot woot! Then, on Friday the movie “Oz the Great and Powerful” will finally be released! More wooting!
Let’s just say that I’m a little bit of an Oz…Head? Freak? Not really sure how to classify myself, but let’s just say I like the Wizard of Oz a LOT. I watched it nearly every day my kindergarten year and multiple years I dressed as Dorothy for Halloween. So what’s the obsession about? I’m not going to get too into my childhood issues but psychoanalytic theory would suggest that I was enacting a phenomenon called “mastery.”
Kids and adults, with any variety of issues, will often re-enact an unresolved issue until they feel a sense of closure. It could be enacted through pretend play, reading, watching a film, or even in real life. For example, let’s just say there was a girl with issues of displacement. You know, maybe her parents were divorced and so she didn’t really have one home to settle into. It could be theorized that she would enact her desire to have a home through a character like Dorothy, who was lost and seeking to find her way home. You may also see this in friends of yours who date people with similar issues over and over again. Why does he always pick girls who are irresponsible? Maybe his mom was an alcoholic. He couldn’t fix her when he was a child despite his desperate desire to. Now, there’s a part of him that still wants to save her. He re-enacts that saga through his dating life. Make sense?
Pretty interesting stuff if you ask me. Makes you think about all the stories you obsessed over as a kid, doesn’t it? Welcome to my world. The curse of my education is a tendency to over-analyze everything! Ha! I think I’ll do my best to let all of that psychobabble fall to the wayside and just enjoy the the-a-tah!
